How Premier League works
The Premier League is the top division of English football: twenty clubs, each playing the other home and away, with the title, the European places and relegation all decided by the same table.
Every club plays thirty-eight league matches. Three points for a win, one for a draw, and goal difference separating clubs level on points — there is no playoff and no conference split, so the table is read straight down.
The bottom three clubs are relegated to the division below and are replaced by three promoted clubs, which means the last month of the season usually contains two separate competitions running at opposite ends of the table.
European qualification is decided by final position, with cup winners able to take a place as well, so several races run at once through the spring.
