How Serie A works
Serie A is the top division of Italian football: twenty clubs playing each other home and away, with the title, European places and relegation all settled by the same table.
Every club plays thirty-eight league matches, three points for a win and one for a draw. Clubs level on points are separated first by their head-to-head record, which is the clearest structural difference from the English and German tables.
The bottom three clubs are relegated to the second tier and are replaced by promoted clubs, one of which arrives through a playoff rather than automatic promotion.
European qualification follows final position, with the domestic cup winner able to take a place as well, so more than one race usually runs into the final matchday.
