How LaLiga works

LaLiga is the top division of Spanish football: twenty clubs playing a double round-robin, with the championship, European qualification and relegation all settled on the same points table.

Each club plays thirty-eight matches, home and away against every other. Points decide the table, and Spain separates clubs level on points by head-to-head record first rather than goal difference — a detail that regularly changes who finishes where.

The bottom three clubs are relegated to the second division, and three clubs come up in their place, one of them through a playoff rather than automatically.

European places are awarded by final position, so the fight for the qualifying spots often lasts longer into the season than the title race does.
