Background
How the NBA is structured
The league is divided into two conferences of fifteen teams, and each conference into three divisions. Divisions matter less than they once did — they shape parts of the schedule but no longer guarantee a high seed — so the conference standings are the table that actually decides the postseason.
Every team plays a fixed number of games, weighted so that conference and division opponents are met more often than teams from the other side of the country. That weighting is why records across conferences are not perfectly comparable, and why the same win total can mean different things in the East and the West.
The postseason takes the top teams from each conference, adds a short play-in round for the teams just below the cut, and then runs best-of-seven series. Both conference champions meet in the Finals.
