How Eredivisie works
The Eredivisie is the top division of Dutch football: eighteen clubs over thirty-four matchdays, with playoffs deciding part of the European allocation and the final relegation place.
The league season is a straight double round-robin ordered on points and goal difference, but it does not end the story: playoffs follow for European places and against relegation.
The bottom two clubs are relegated automatically and the club above them plays off against second-tier opposition.
The champions enter the Champions League, with the following places routed into the Champions League qualifying rounds or the other European competitions depending on the coefficient.
