How 2. Bundesliga works
The 2. Bundesliga is the second tier of German football: eighteen clubs playing thirty-four matches, with two automatic promotion places and a playoff for a third.
Every club plays thirty-four matches, home and away. The table is decided on points and goal difference, exactly as in the division above.
The top two clubs are promoted automatically. The third-placed club plays a two-legged relegation playoff against the sixteenth-placed Bundesliga club, which frequently decides the season for both divisions.
At the other end the bottom two go down to the 3. Liga and the sixteenth-placed club faces its own two-legged playoff.
