How Ligue 1 works
Ligue 1 is the top division of French football, reduced from twenty clubs to eighteen, which shortened the season and changed how the relegation places are decided.
Each club plays thirty-four league matches. Points, then goal difference, decide the order, and there is no split or playoff for the title.
The bottom two clubs go down automatically and the club above them enters a playoff against a second-tier side, so the final place is settled after the league season ends.
European qualification is decided by final position alongside the domestic cup, and the exact allocation moves with the country's coefficient.
