Compression at the top
The closer the technical rules, the smaller the gap between the best and the median car. That does not remove hierarchy — organisations with better engineers, better simulation and better crews still rise — but it changes where the hierarchy comes from. A budget cannot be spent on a fundamentally better chassis, so it is spent on understanding the one everybody has.
This is why setup detail carries so much weight: tyre pressures, ride heights, tape and springs are the levers still available, and small errors are visible immediately in long-run pace.
Execution as performance
In a compressed field, positions gained in the pit box are worth as much as positions gained on track and are far more repeatable. A crew that is consistently a few tenths quicker over a season converts that into finishes, which is why crew recruitment and training is treated as a competitive department rather than support staff.
The same logic applies to strategy. When cars are close, the crew chief's decision about when to stop is often the largest single variable in the afternoon.
What it costs
The trade is engineering spectacle. Spec racing produces close finishes and rarely produces a genuinely novel machine, so fans who value technical variety lose something real. The counterweight is that the racing stays watchable without one team disappearing over the horizon for three seasons.
